Evgeni Malkin was at the King's practice facility in El Segundo, near LAX, for the 11:15 - 12:30 private session.
He looked fantastic!
He's built like Jagr 1990, about 6'3 190. He had on a green sweater, tucked in, with a "Pirates of the Carribean" looking emblem with the words "Bad Boys" on the front (must've been compliments of Jerry Bruckheimer - one of Pat Brisson's friends). His number was not 17 or 71, but 77! White helmet, blue CCM pants, all white socks.
There were about 16 players on the ice, including (I believe) Glen Murray, Brian Gionta, Scott Thornton, George Parros, Jordan Leopold, Matthieu Schneider and Andrei Zyuzin (the only other Russian, I believe).
They were finishing up a shooting drill when I got there, and then the group went into a pickup game - 5 on 5 with 3 reserves. One of the goalies had on a black jersey and bright yellow pads! (nope, it wasn't him). The other goalie had a USA jersey on. I believe they each were prospects.
The game was non-contact and pretty skillful and fast. About 3 shifts in, it was obvious that no one was in great shape, but Malkin skated as hard as anyone. He has a similar skating styple to Jagr, and he is FAST. He has long strides and makes quick turns and always seems to be facing the puck. His passes were SHARP. He even back-checked quite effectively. Never gave up on a play. Hip looks fine.
Malkin and Gionta set up each other a couple times each and there was a Kings' prospect (I believe) who Evgeni had a couple 2 on 1's with. Malkin never took a slapshot, it was more hard passes, moves and wristers. He overpassed a couple times, but it seemed as though that's what he was working on. He scored twice and had 3 assists in a ~ 12 goal total game. After each goal, some of the 20 or so people attending the practice whistled and clapped.
One time, he skated by and I yelled "Go Malkin" - he raised his stick and head and acknowledged it. This, of course, tells me that he can hear, and he knows his name.
George Parros has long hair and a mustache and he looks like Gallagher with a helmet. He was the biggest player out there.
Players gradually began dropping out of the game as they got tired. Malkin stayed in, until the last two skaters were Zyuzin and him. Evgeni gathered some pucks, skated them to the blueline and began doing mini-breakaways. The first couple were shots, and then he started doing moves and mixing it up. Nothing full speed, but great moves: fake shots with leg kicks, head bobs, fakes to open up the goalie's legs, upper corner goals and near misses.
At the end, he and Zyuzin gathered the pucks and collected them in the buckets. He posed for a photo by the bench with a reporter.
