David Beckham insists he does not want to leave Real Madrid in the summer but admitted that a summer transfer move could not be ruled out with signs that club president Florentino Perez is growing disillusioned with the so-called 'galactico' transfer policy he pioneered.
Speaking at a club press conference on Thursday, Beckham did not exclude the possibility of moving on.
"I've already said that I'm happy in Madrid. I want to stay, but you never know in football," said the former Manchester United man.
"People say players are getting sold at the end of the season but we can handle it. The motivation for us now is to prove people wrong."
There is also speculation about the future of Michael Owen who has failed to nail down a regular starting spot despite despite scoring nine goals in under 1200 minutes of football.
"Everybody knows that Michael is a great player and a great goalscorer, but that's for the manager to decide and not for me," said Beckham.
"People see what a great goalscorer he is but it's difficult for the coach because he has also got two great players in Raul and Ronaldo to choose from - I wouldn't like to be the coach."
The midfielder will not concede defeat in the race for the Primera Liga title even though Real trail leaders Barcelona by 11 points.
"I've had the advantage of being in a team that was 11 points behind when Manchester United came back against Newcastle. But we have to win games and we have to be positive in everything," said Beckham.
"It's not over because this team is one of the best in the world.
"We haven't won anything for two years but we are not finished and we have to believe in ourselves and make people believe in us," he added.
Madrid have been criticised from all corners following a dreadful fortnight which saw them knocked out of the Champions League and lose to local neighbours Getafe to seemingly drop out of the title race.
In an attempt to get the best out of his players, and to make a show of unity, Perez on Wednesday held a meeting with the squad to stress the importance of performing until the end of the season, something Beckham thought was a positive move.
"The reaction was good, and it is important for the players and the president to talk and for people to see that. But only the players can change the situation and we can do that if we work hard and we play hard," said the England skipper.
"I didn't think this season would be like last season because Real Madrid are a great club, nevertheless football is football," said Beckham.
Madrid's second disappointing season has also raised numerous questions about the continuity of a squad whose star players are starting to show their age, and Beckham admits clubs like Real have to continually look at ways to improve.
"Personally I think that when big clubs have top teams they always look to bring new players in. We did it at Manchester United and they also do it at Chelsea, Arsenal and AC Milan.
"It's not up to me to say who we should bring in. We have a good team and some of the best players in the world. It's up to the president and the coach to decide."
If Beckham were to leave Madrid one possible destination could be Chelsea who Beckham admitted could be on the way to overtaking Madrid in terms of importance.
"I don't think we have lost the 'galactico' tag. We've still got the best players in the world," said Beckham.
"I said Chelsea could be classed as Real Madrid if they carried on playing and winning games, playing as they did against Barcelona, in the Champions League and the Premiership. But I think anybody who plays against Real Madrid will still look forward to playing against us."
